For trips within Brazil, an official photo ID is enough. Mercosur countries accept the Brazilian ID card in good condition. Other destinations require a valid passport and, in some cases, a visa.
The wrong document is the most common reason for denied boarding. Here is what is required for each type of trip.
Trips within Brazil
Adults board domestic flights with an official photo ID: national ID card, driving licence or passport.
Mercosur and associated countries
Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia and Ecuador accept Brazilian citizens with their national ID card in good condition. A driving licence is not valid as an international travel document.
Other international destinations
A valid passport is required. Many countries ask for a minimum validity beyond the travel date, often six months. Also check:
- Visa: mandatory for the United States and other countries.
- Europe (Schengen Area): no visa for tourism of up to 90 days, but travel insurance with at least EUR 30,000 of cover is required.
- Vaccines: some countries require a yellow fever certificate.
Children and teenagers
Minors need an ID on any trip. On international trips, a minor travelling with only one parent, alone or with third parties needs a notarised travel authorisation.
Rules change. Confirm the requirements for your destination before travelling.
